Have you ever wondered how our elderly tenants make ends meet on a low fixed income?

Everyone has been impacted by inflation and rising food costs! The ones hurt the most are vulnerable people on low fixed incomes.

More Than a Store 3.0 is one of the everyday ways we address this. This tenant-led mini convenience store opened on July 17th in Sunset Towers. The concept is quite simple, convenience store items are bought in bulk and sold in smaller quantities without mark-up. Labour is supplied by capable tenant volunteers.

Startup and overhead costs are shared by More Than A Roof Foundation and the MTR Housing Group.

The objective is to help alleviate poverty by providing items at lower prices. There is a side benefit of the onsite location for the many Towers residents who have a tough time just getting around.

Enthusiastic staffers Rebekah Rova, and Arrabelle Gonzalez helped lead the charge by converting what was once a storage space into a welcoming environment for the community.

Arrabelle has been a strong advocate in the West End community for supporting seniors’ access to affordable goods and promoting the benefits of social gatherings.

“We are super grateful for our hardworking volunteers, whose openness to new ideas is inspiring. “ – Rebekah Rova

The store will be open multiple times a week, much like the Soul Kitchen, creating opportunities for people to get together. It is a place where the community can connect, share a chat over coffee, and meet new people through volunteering.

The store isn’t just about convenience, it’s a place where people can connect and support one another. Your contributions help keep prices low and the community strong.

Our efforts are making a real difference in people’s lives.
