2026 Foundation Awards
Every year, More Than a Roof Foundation provides scholarships, bursaries, and grants that support MTR residents in their pursuit of education, training, and the development of stronger communities. The Awards also honour people and companies in the broader community doing more to break cycles of poverty and homelessness.
2026 award applications and nominations are now open. You can apply for yourself or nominate someone in your life for an award until April 1, 2026.
Scholarships
Scholarships are monetary awards for residents graduating from high school and pursuing post-secondary education. While every graduating resident is eligible for a scholarship, academic merit informs the scholarship’s value.
Bursaries
Bursaries are monetary awards for residents seeking new job training or the acquisition of new skills. Bursaries may also be awarded to support resident participation in activities like summer camp. Bursaries are needs-based, not merit-based.
Grants
Grants are monetary awards for tenants or members of the neighborhoods where MTR communities are located to support community-building activities.
The Key Holder Awards
These awards recognize residents demonstrating attributes MTR recognizes are key to building a hopeful future including leadership, resilience, and compassion. While all MTR residents are eligible for these awards, the Foundation places a special emphasis on honouring young people. Keyholder Awards are issued in April annually — applications or nominations for these awards are accpeted between December 1 and March 31.
The Distinguished Alumni Awards
These awards recognize former MTR residents making a positive contribution at their place of employment, in their families or in the communities in which they choose to live. Distinguished Alumni Awards are issued in April annually — applications or nominations for these awards are accpeted between December 1 and March 31.
The Heart for Home Awards

Heart for Home Awards are issued in April annually— applications or nominations for these awards are accpeted between December 1 and March 31.
The Credit Empowerment Program for Residents
Turning Rent Payments into Credit-Building Opportunities
For close to 40 years, More Than a Roof has helped individuals and families build stability and belonging through transformative, affordable housing rooted in dignity and community.
Now, through a partnership with Binta Financial, MTR is piloting a new initiative: The Credit Empowerment Program. Through this program, residents can turn on-time rent payments into recognized credit history, transforming housing stability into financial mobility.
By ensuring rent payments are reported to Canada’s major credit bureaus, residents can build stronger credit profiles and unlock access to fair lending, better housing options, and real pathways toward homeownership and long-term prosperity.
Why This Matters
- Recognizing responsibility
- Rent is one of life’s largest and most consistent financial commitments, it should count toward building credit.
- Opening doors to opportunity
- Stronger credit helps residents access housing, fair financial products, and future ownership opportunities.
- Advancing dignity and empowerment
- Each payment becomes proof of reliability and resilience, building confidence and expanding possibilities.
