Welcome to Soul Kitchen
Healthy food served alongside meaningful connections is the heart of Soul Kitchen, More Than a Roof’s community dining room.
People come to Soul Kitchen for food when they are hungry. From pantry staples and fresh vegetables to hearty weekly meals, Soul Kitchen addresses food insecurity with practical, compassionate solutions.
When you provide a meal for More Than a Roof residents at Soul Kitchen, you provide more than just food security. You also give residents an opportunity to get to know their neighbours, form meaningful relationships and access other vital resources that help people transform their lives.
What does Soul Kitchen do?
Soul Kitchen is our community dining room for More Than a Roof (MTR) residences in Downtown Vancouver.
Regular Meals
300 hot, nutritious meals are cooked and served at a low-cost to residents every week. Everyone is welcome.
Accessible Groceries
Food donations from IGA and Earls Test Kitchen are sorted and distributed to residents who need them, improving the quality and quantity of available food.
Community Connections
Neighbours eat together and volunteer together at Soul Kitchen. They forge meaningful friendships, reduce isolation and lift everyone up.
“It’s like night and day from how I used to live. Now I always have a home to come back to and a meal in front of me.” – Dave, MTR Resident
We believe in the power of the community dining table to both nourish the body and feed the soul.
Hunger close to home
For people who are recently housed, cooking and meal planning can present an enormous challenge. Groceries are expensive and budgets are tight. Cooking is often unfamiliar and intimidating.
Too often, we’ve heard from residents that they aren’t certain where their next meal will come from.
“We’ve always been concerned about food insecurity, but in recent years we’ve seen the issue get more and more acute. With the rise in cost of living, our residents are struggling to make their budgets stretch to the end of the month.”
— Jim Loney, Chief Operating Officer, More Than a Roof Housing Society
Soul Kitchen is our practical, low-barrier response to the daily challenges of food insecurity for folks living at four of our Downtown Vancouver locations.
Your gift of $5 provides your neighbour with a nutritious meal at Soul Kitchen, our community dining table.
*We would like to acknowledge the generous support of IGA on Robson Street and Earl’s Test Kitchen– our weekly contributors of in-kind food donations.
“I eat at Soul Kitchen and rely on the weekly meals…Even after six years in recovery and three years of not being homeless I struggle with selfcare and routine meal times living alone. Having meals on regular days and times with the option to socialize has greatly enhanced the quality of my life.”
— Laura, MTR Resident
